Reasons Why Women Should Consider Hunting
I have been hunting for over 25 years, and I have been fortunate enough to find hunting partners that are excited to bring me along. This isn’t always the truth for women. I could list upwards of 80 women I have talked to over the years that wish they could learn to hunt but don’t have anyone to take them or teach them. This could be because of many factors, but often times it is because the door isn’t opened for them.
It is different for the female individual that wants to learn to hunt. Often times in order to be valued as a knowledgeable and capable hunter you have to prove yourself. You have to prove that you can keep up in the outdoors and have the grit to persevere when it gets tough. This may not be the experience for all, but in my experience, you definitely have to prove you can take the heat.
If you are male on the other hand, when you turn the age required to take hunters education/safety, you take the course and, wahlah - you have been deemed a hunter! This may be a bold statement and a sweeping generalization, but we women, since the beginning of time, have had to earn our seat at the table in many aspects of life. If you were to ask my hunting crew, they would, without a doubt tell you that I am one of the most capable and knowledgeable hunters they know, woman or man. But, I had to qualify myself to earn that title and be excepted into the club.
With all that said, and the sport being primarily male-dominated and women only holding about 12% of the hunting licenses in the USA, I still believe that if given the opportunity we could make up closer to half of the hunters in the nation, based on the desire to learn and the change in belief systems.
Here are a few of the MANY reasons women should take up hunting:
Empowerment and Self-Sufficiency
Hunting is fundamentally an act of empowerment. When women venture into the field, they step into a role that embodies independence and self-reliance. The skills learned through hunting—tracking, marksmanship, and wilderness survival—instill a sense of confidence that transcends the hunting experience.
By taking responsibility for procuring our own food, we women learn to appreciate the value of hard work and dedication. The act of harvesting game fosters a profound connection to the sources of our sustenance, highlighting the importance of ethical and responsible practices. This not only enhances self-sufficiency but also promotes a greater understanding of the natural world and our place within it.
Hunting encourages women to confront challenges head-on. Whether navigating rugged terrain, mastering shooting techniques, or overcoming fears, each experience builds resilience and fortitude. The empowerment gained from these moments translates into everyday life, encouraging women to pursue their ambitions, challenge societal norms, and advocate for themselves in all areas.
Connection to Nature
In an age where technology often distracts us from the natural world, hunting offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature. The experience of being outdoors—listening to the rustle of leaves, observing wildlife, and absorbing the tranquility of a forest or field—nourishes the spirit.
Hunting fosters a deep appreciation for ecosystems and the delicate balance of wildlife. Women who hunt become advocates for conservation, understanding the importance of preserving habitats and protecting species for future generations. This connection to nature enriches life, providing a sense of peace and fulfillment that is often hard to find in our fast-paced, urban environments.
Additionally, many women find solace and rejuvenation in the quiet moments spent in the wilderness. The time spent hunting allows for reflection, mindfulness, and a break from the demands of daily life. It is an opportunity to rediscover oneself, cultivate gratitude, and gain clarity amidst the beauty of the natural world.
Community and Camaraderie
Hunting is not just an individual pursuit; it is also a communal activity that fosters strong bonds and friendships. Women who hunt often find a supportive community that shares their passion and values. This camaraderie is invaluable, providing a network of encouragement and shared experiences.
Hunting groups, clubs, and workshops specifically designed for women create safe spaces where skills can be learned and shared without judgment. These communities celebrate achievements, whether it’s a successful hunt or mastering a new technique, and provide mentorship for those just starting out. The friendships formed in these settings often extend beyond the hunt, creating lasting connections built on mutual respect and shared adventures.
As more women enter the hunting world, they contribute to changing the narrative around female hunters. By standing together, women can challenge stereotypes, advocate for inclusivity, and inspire future generations. The visibility of women in hunting empowers others to step outside their comfort zones and pursue their interests, regardless of societal expectations.
Conclusion
Hunting is a multifaceted activity that offers women a chance to reclaim their agency, connect with the natural world, and build strong communities. It is a powerful affirmation of the belief that women are capable of all things, fostering independence and resilience while celebrating the beauty of nature and the bonds of friendship. As you consider embarking on this journey, remember that hunting is not just about the chase; it is about embracing who you are, discovering your strengths, and carving your own path in a world that is increasingly open to the limitless potential of women.
